Preparing Your Garden Plants For Winter

The cold may spell a death sentence for your plants, but there are ways to prepare your garden for winter. If you want to prepare your garden for winter then be sure to prune plants before the frost arrives. You don't have to do a lot of pruning since plants naturally shrink back any excess leaves before the winter arrives to conserve on energy. Many plants will revert to a dormant state in order to bounce back during the spring time. If you find any excess leaves or stems that can be trimmed then give your plants a boost by making them fit and trim.

Lay down the proper soil nutrients around your garden to prepare your garden for winter. Give them the last amount of any soil nutrition they will need to make it through winter. Make sure the roots are well watered and the soil is properly drained in preparation for the spring season. Add mulch around your garden bed to trap in as much heat during the winter months. This will be a very effective measure at a time when plants will need as much warmth as given for survival. Adding a tarp over your garden may do more harm than good, depending on what type of garden you are growing. A tarp may weigh plants down and any snow may weigh down the tarp, crushing your plants in the process. However, for plants like onion or carrot fields, it may prove useful to lay a tarp over them to protect them from the elements. It will all depend on what types of plants you are trying to preserve to prepare your garden for winter so visit your local gardening center or nursery and ask about the best ways to prepare your garden for winter. They may be able to provide you some useful tips that you may have never thought of before.

For potted plants, bring them indoors and expose them to as much direct sunlight as possible by placing them on window sills. If your area does not get much sunlight during the winter months then try artificial lighting with the right amount of watts that will still be able to nurture your plants. Bringing in as many plants inside as possible is a sure way to protect them from frosty weather. For plants that are outside all you can do is hope for the best and give them the necessary amount of nutrients.
